Veterinary Surgery at Tulare Veterinary Hospital

Tulare Veterinary Hospital provides a variety of general surgical procedures for dogs and cats.

Before surgery, our veterinarians will discuss why we believe a particular procedure is necessary, what the surgery entails, and expected recovery times. Surgeries performed at our hospital include:

  • General Surgery: General (soft tissue) surgery is associated with the skin and tissue. Soft tissue surgery includes tumor removal, cystotomy, intestinal foreign body removal, splenectomy, C-section, spay/neuter, and more.
  • Orthopedic Surgery: Orthopedic surgery corrects musculoskeletal conditions such as degenerative joint diseases, knee pain, joint injuries and spinal conditions. Traumatic injuries such as broken bones and torn cruciate ligaments can also be repaired with orthopedic surgery.
  • Dental Surgery: We perform some types of dental surgery such as tooth extraction, oral tumor removal, and fracture repair.
  • Emergency Surgery: Typical emergency surgeries we perform include wound repair, laceration repair, and foreign object removal.

Please note that orthopedic and other advanced surgical procedures are referred to a surgical specialist.

Pre-Surgical Care

Before surgery, your pet will be screened and anesthetics will be hand-selected depending on your pet’s breed, age, health, and other factors. Blood tests will also be done before any anesthesia is given to confirm that your pet’s liver, heart, and kidneys are functioning properly and that your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia.

Patient Monitoring

Our entire staff will ensure that your pet is safe and as comfortable as possible throughout the entire surgery. Your pet’s vital signs will be carefully monitored by a trained technician – pets undergoing surgery will have their blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels monitored to keep them safe during the entire process.

Pain Management

If necessary, the comprehensive pain management plan may include at-home pain medication to keep your dog or cat as comfortable as possible. We are more than happy to walk you through every step and explain everything you need to know for post-surgery care at home.
